Reveal key takeaways

Picking the best Shopify themes that your budget allows is the most significant early success factor for your ecommerce store.

Your Shopify theme dictates how quickly you can launch and how easy it is to build a professional customer experience from initial discovery to checkout.

There’s a common trait among the best Shopify themes to make it as simple as possible for you to launch a professional store and optimize it. The likes of pre-built sections and built-in features that reduce your dependency on apps, such as bundles, are offered by the best themes.

Shopify’s recent Horizon collection has also shifted the quality game for free themes, making it even easier to launch a high-quality store at minimal cost.

It’s easy to think of your Shopify theme as nothing more than a pretty face, but behind the visuals lies the infrastructure for your complete onsite customer experience.

Here’s why your theme choice matters:

  • Support quality: Some themes have significantly more documentation and community forums you can lean on to set up your store within a few hours.
  • Build times: Themes with demo imports help you get going, but even without those, most themes have pre-built sections you can add, which vary in quality.
  • Built-in features: There’s a potential to save money on app subscriptions with themes that already have countdown timers, bundles, free shipping bars, and other elements.
  • Accessibility: Some of your customers will need assistive technology, such as screen readers, to browse. Your theme controls whether that’s possible by default, and Shopify Theme Store themes must now pass strict standards.
  • Speed: Reducing page load times by one second increases mobile conversions by as much as 3% (Yottaa), and 63% of people bounce when load times exceed four seconds.
  • SEO impact: Your organic visibility depends on clean code, a good user experience, and fast load times, as we mentioned before, regardless of how good your content is.
  • Mobile responsiveness: The percentage of global mobile visitors was 62.54% as of the second quarter of 2025 (Statista), with your theme dictating the quality of your design.

The brand’s email tool of choice is Omnisend, which it uses across its customer journey from welcome series to post-purchase, with automated emails achieving a 64% open rate.

Testing your shortlist of themes

Follow these steps to test the themes that interest you:

  • Run through their demo stores to get a feel for them. It’s as easy as clicking the View demo button on the theme’s Shopify Theme Store page.
  • Install the theme on your Shopify account. You can install free and premium themes via the Shopify Theme Store without paying anything upfront. You only pay for premium themes when you choose to buy them. Any initial installation is a trial.
  • Preview the theme. Select the Online Store menu item in your Shopify sidebar and find your new theme from the list. Click the three little dots and select Preview:
Best Shopify themes: Screenshot of a theme library with two themes listed: Enterprise (Trial, version 2.2.1, added 9 minutes ago) and Section Store Demo (version 1.0.0, added Jan 21). A dropdown menu shows options to preview, remove, or publish the theme.
Image via Shopify
  • Edit the theme to reveal its templates, features, and settings. After previewing the theme, head back to the Online store dashboard and click Edit theme to load the editor. From here, do these tasks:
    • The cog icon in the top menu opens the Theme settings. Check options for cart, animations, design, and other unique theme elements.
    • Select any elements in the theme builder to open up their settings. These give you an idea of how much editing and configuration is necessary to achieve the designs of demos. The image below shows the editor:
Best Shopify themes: A website editing interface shows a photography-themed homepage with icons of cameras and accessories. An overlay popup titled Shop our range prompts users to choose a department. Editing tools appear on the left sidebar.
Image via Shopify
  • Run your website through Google PageSpeed Insights and GTmetrix to see how fast it loads, and to what extent you’ll need to optimize it.
  • Check your theme on desktop, smartphone, and tablet devices. Ensure that their layouts stay professional and tappable, accessible elements.

Pro tip

Theme demos show professional builds that often require significant configuration to replicate. Some themes have presets, also known as ready-made designs, which will save you time, but you should still expect lots of work to get your store looking its best. That’s why we recommend testing the theme editor, not just previewing the theme after installation.

How I evaluated these themes

I visited the Shopify Theme Store, filtered for free and premium themes, and manually researched multiple themes with high customer ratings.

The free themes available via Shopify’s Theme Store number only 24 and have consistently lower scores than premium themes. My choices for those came from a review of their demos and customer feedback. Only good themes made my list.

For premium themes, I took a closer look at the features available that could save money, such as built-in popups and sticky carts. The reviews are high for most premium themes, so I only picked those with a decent feature-to-value ratio.

Key criteria:

  • Shopify Theme Store themes only
  • Shopify 2.0 themes only
  • Good customer reviews, and in the face of negative feedback, support responses and updates
  • Features that save money, such as cross-sells
  • Mobile responsiveness and speed optimization

How to choose the right Shopify theme

Now that you’ve made it this far, I’ll provide some fast recommendations based on your potential use cases and where your store is at:

Three factors to consider before installing a theme

  • Free versus premium themes. Spending hundreds of dollars on a theme could prove good value if it has features that reduce your need for paid apps and development time. Free themes work best for a basic customer experience and when you’re happy to refine with code and apps manually.
  • Match the theme to your product count. The Shopify Theme Store has filters for one product, 2-10, 11-100+, and 500+ product catalogs.
  • Your technical comfort level. Free themes are basic, but sometimes lack the pre-built sections and blocks you need to build a store. Review each theme’s capabilities, support levels, and your own desire to put in the work.

FAQs

Which is the best theme for Shopify?

Multiple themes are rated 100% by customers on the Shopify Theme Store, including Sleek, Agile, and District, each of which could be considered “the best.” In reality, the best theme is the one you find most attractive and converts well.

What are Horizon themes, and should I use one?

Horizon is a collection of 10 free Shopify themes available via the Shopify Theme Store, primarily targeting DTC brands but also fashion labels and dropshippers. Their ratings span 24% to 50%, so they don’t match the quality of paid themes.

Free vs. paid Shopify themes — what’s the difference?

A free theme has no one-off or recurring cost. A paid theme is something you buy; you can allocate it to your marketing budget. Free themes are the cheapest way to launch your store, but you could end up paying for apps that cost more than a paid theme with those features built in.

What is the highest converting theme?

Themes with high user ratings (>90%) are good places to start, although no Shopify theme can claim to be the highest-converting. Your conversion rates depend on your product pages, social proof, pricing, and customer experience from pre- to post-purchase

How to pick the best theme?

Start with the Shopify Theme Store’s premium themes first and check out Horizon for free, Motion for $400, and Wonder for $390. Their features are among the best for the use cases. Look at their reviews and pay attention to any poor recent feedback following updates. Avoid themes that release poor updates frequently.
